RACE 1 – ROSEMARY ATFIELD MEMORIAL – 1609 metres

TUPPENCE – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Driver G Panella was questioned regarding the tactics employed on TUPPENCE. In particular her decision to maintain the lead until approaching the 1200 metres. G Panella explained that trainer D Binskin had instructed her to attempt to try and lead however, if she was pressured significantly, she was to obtain cover.  With that in mind, G Panella said that after beginning well she was keen to maintain the lead until it was clear that WAVETHEBILL NZ was going to continue to challenge and GLIDING AWAY NZ was under restraint as she did not want to be racing three back along the marker pegs.  G Panella stated that when the first quarter of 25.5 was posted she acknowledged she needed to give TUPPENCE some respite and immediately allowed WAVETHEBILL NZ to cross her runner.  G Panella was adamant that TUPPENCE does race better when able to lead.  G Panella’s explanation was noted however she was advised to ensure that she drives the gelding in a consistent manner.

CHEVRON ART NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Unable to secure clear running at any stage of the home straight and was not fully tested.

GLIDING AWAY NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Approaching the 1200 metres when being restrained the gelding was inclined to race roughly.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities.  When questioned regarding the tactics employed on GLIDING AWAY NZ driver L Green explained that the gelding was down in grade is a big strong horse that likes to run his own pace and roll along without being restrained.  He added that the geldings form is better than it appeared and he has been racing without luck in higher grade races.  Connections were confident that had GLIDING AWAY NZ been able to obtain a forward position or potentially the lead, it was expected that the gelding would be more than competitive in tonight’s event.  L Green added that after beginning well GLIDING AWAY NZ was not able to cross WAVETHEBILL NZ and he was surprised that TUPPENCE and WAVETHEBILL NZ were driven as aggressively as they were when presented with an opportunity to take cover from his runner.  L Green said that in his opinion GLIDING AWAY NZ is a much better horse when able to obtain the lead.  L Green’s explanation was noted.

PORT AU PRINCE NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.  Held up in the latter stages of the home straight.

SURF ACE – Inclined to hang out when placed under pressure over the concluding stages.  When questioned regarding improved performance of SURF ACE trainer’s representative A Towers explained that the gelding had only been in the stable for approximately six weeks and in that time he had been racing without luck.  A Towers added that driver L McCarthy was instructed to be positive from the start and attempt to find a forward position on SURF ACE. With this in mind, SURF ACE was able to obtain a favourable position in the running line in the early stages due to the faster than expected tempo.  A Towers said that SURF ACE was in his opinion the beneficiary of a very good drive and a tempo that was suitable.  A Towers explanation was noted and he was advised that Stewards expected that SURF ACE would perform consistently in the immediate future.  Post-race swab samples were obtained.
