SWABS ON HOLD
Swabbing is carried out at all meetings controlled by HRNSW. There are a number of different swab samples that are collected from horses.
The most common form of swab sample is the collection of urine post race. These samples are collected by either the Veterinary surgeon at the race meeting or by an approved swabbing official.
Once collected the swabs are sealed in tamper proof containers in the view of the trainers representative and are then returned to the stewards for transportation to the laboratory. At the time of collection each swab is given its own unique identification number and a receipt is issued to the connections of the horse so that from the time of collection they are aware of the unique identification number of their individual swab.
From the time of its collection right through the testing procedure the swab is only identified by this unique number. At no time does the laboratory become aware of the name of the horse from which the sample was collected or its trainer. This is done to ensure the absolute integrity of the testing procedure.
Once a swab sample has been collected it is then transported to the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory usually the next working day and the testing procedure begins. It can take up to 28 days for the testing to be finalised however most swabs are cleared within 14 days of arrival at the lab.
An identical procedure is followed for blood samples collected both pre and post race, the only significant difference being that a Veterinarian must collect the blood sample. The majority of blood samples are tested for TCO2 levels and this test takes only a few days before the sample is cleared. Blood that is tested for other prohibited substances can, like urine, take up to 28 days before being cleared.
In NSW prize money is withheld pending the clearance of swabs so it is quite normal that payment of prize money can take up to 21 days from the day the prize money was won.
Should any owner have a concern with the delay of payment of prize money due to a swab withholding please feel free to contact the Stewards Department.
