Harness Racing NSW Chairman Ken Brown AM Announces Retirement
3 November 2025
Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) today announces that its Chairman, Mr Ken Brown AM, will retire from his position in February 2026, bringing to a close an exceptional period of leadership and public service that has spanned more than five decades.
HRNSW Chief Executive Officer Peter Buckman paid tribute to Mr Brown’s significant contribution, describing him as: “a leader of the highest integrity whose wisdom, experience and professionalism have strengthened both HRNSW and the broader harness racing industry,” Mr Buckman said.
“Ken’s contribution has been immense.
“He brought to HRNSW a depth of understanding of governance, administration and community service that few can match. His calm, considered leadership and unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability have left an enduring mark on this organisation and the industry it serves.”
Mr Brown’s distinguished career extends beyond harness racing, encompassing more than 50 years in senior roles across the NSW Government, where he was widely respected for his capability, insight and dedication to public service. His leadership was instrumental in advancing major infrastructure, wagering and sporting initiatives, always underpinned by his hallmark qualities of fairness, diligence and integrity.
“Ken has been a guiding hand not just for HRNSW, but for so many of us who have had the privilege of working alongside him,” Mr Buckman said.
“Ken leaves the organisation in a strong and stable position, with his legacy embedded in its culture of professionalism and service.”
Mr Brown’s retirement will create a casual vacancy on the HRNSW Board, which will be filled in the coming months to ensure continuity of business and a seamless transition in governance.
“The Board and staff of HRNSW extend their deepest gratitude to Ken for his outstanding leadership and commitment,” Mr Buckman said.
“His contribution to harness racing, and to the State of New South Wales, has been remarkable. We wish Ken and his wife Lesley every happiness as they look forward to Ken’s well-earned retirement in 2026.”
