Chapple a winner in more ways than one

29 October 2021

After spending eight months off the driving scene Maitland harness racing driver Guy Chapple bounced back with a winner at Newcastle last Monday.

Chapple won on the Mitch Chapple-trained Roclea Image, which was his first drive since February.

It was 12 months ago that Chapple was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

“Some days are good, some days are bad but the horses have been a good distraction,” he said.

“They make you get up out of bed every day and give you purpose.

“You can’t give up, you just have to be positive and have a good support team.”

One of his supports has been his son Mitch, who has taken over the training of their horses in this time.

They will combine their efforts in race six at Newcastle tonight with Roclea Ruler.

Chapple has also picked up the drive on the Alex Alchin-trained Im Rockin It in race eight.

The iForm team have put together the best bets for today’s meetings:

Newcastle best bet

Race 3: Louis Litt (3)

Handy Menangle performances at his past couple of appearances suggests he could have their measure.

Newcastle next best

Race 5: Pay Me Sam (10)

Well performed last preparation and is capable of testing favourite players following a useful Menangle trial.

Around the tracks

West Wyalong best bet

Race 4: Baxter Red (8)

Handy 3yo that looks to have a big enough class edge to overcome the back row.

Parkes best bet

Race 4: Mach Daddy (5)

Faces a class drop and should be too strong.
