Morris the man to follow
22 March 2022
HE lands a century of winners just about every season.
And while the lion’s share of those wins are for his wife KerryAnn, ace reinsman Robbie Morris still finds himself hot property whenever the stable doesn’t have a runner in any midweek race at Tabcorp Park Menangle.
Morris is the man to follow at Menangle again today and at least three stables have been quick to jump on the phone and book him to enhance their hopes of victory.
He will drive three favourites too, with only the first one, Strength Of Heart ($2) in Race 1, trained by KerryAnn.
Morris has a way with the trotters and showed a glimpse of his talent on Saturday night with a peg-hugging drive to score on $41 outsider Sunny Gee for popular owners Russell and Kerry Commens.
At one stage Morris had three choices in today’s opening race as he was also listed to drive stablemate Queen Of Strathfield or one of Troy Williams’ three runners, Mebomba.
Victorian trainer Brent Thomson has also snapped up Morris to drive last-start Bendigo winner Ima Destroyer ($51) in Race 2, a heat of the HRNSW Trotters Foundation series for four-year-olds.
Williams does have Morris ready to handle polemarker Idle Hands ($7.50 second favourite) in Race 3 with his Menangle neighbour Rickie Alchin producing lightly-raced filly Meticulous Miss, an odds-on favourite in early markets.
Morris also renews ties with Kerry Towers’ handy gelding Will I Am ($3.50) in Race 6.
He has driven this pacer just three times for Towers but has tasted success, scoring at Bathurst in good time in January before unplaced efforts at Newcastle and Goulburn.
The Morris stable will also be looking for some improvement from former Kiwi pacer Rocknroll Mama ($10) in Race 7.
Rocknroll Mama has three wins at the roomy Addington circuit in Christchurch on his resume but despite showing good gate speed, has not been able to show her worth here with three unplaced runs.
Drawn gate one today, Morris should be able to lead or take a trail and the well-bred mare might show some improvement today.
Rob has one more drive for the stable in Race 8 when he takes the reins behind the costly Bettor To Be Tricky ($17).
The veteran pacer has finished just behind the placegetters at five of his past six starts and again will have to be driven for luck.
