Vale: John Menzies

25 September 2023

It is with sadness that HRNSW informs of the passing of harness racing stalwart John Menzies on the weekend, aged 86.

Referred to as one of the “legends of the north-west”, John had a celebrated harness racing career and even up until last year, was involved in the industry helping the Armidale Harness Racing Club where he could.
Based in Uralla, John sat behind some talented pacers in his training and driving days including the mare Rachel McGregor in the very first Miracle Mile won by Robin Dundee.
In fact, this was John’s first defeat at Harold Park after Rachel McGregor finished fifth in that 1967 Miracle Mile – John had had won his first five drives at that track.
Reflecting on John’s time in the industry, attached is a lovely story written by Bill Ellis in the June 2012 Gazette.
John is survived by wife Pat and sons Phillip, Nigel and Tim and HRNSW extends its deepest sympathies to John’s family and many friends.
