Long serving employee Julie Waller retires

7 July 2015

After more than 33 years of service highly respected HRNSW employee Julie Waller retired today.  As the organisation's longest continuous serving employee, Julie will be missed especially by the Stewards department who she has worked so closely with.

Julie started her working life at the ABC in the Organisation and Methods section before being promoted to Finance.  After leaving the ABC to have a family, Julie returned to the workforce and was immediately offered employment at an accountants and the Harness Racing Authority in Raymond Street Bankstown.

Despite having little knowledge of harness racing Julie decided to take the job with the Authority and since those early days has seen a number of great improvements.

“My first role was to keep the performance records and details of all horses in NSW with names starting with S-Z and back in those days there were no computers and everything was done by hand,” Julie said.

“The Stewards would bring in the race book from the meetings they had attended and I would have to write all of the details up for each horse on their individual cards, it was very time consuming and when we finally moved to a computer based system it certainly saved a lot of time.”

Eight Chairmen have been in charge of the regulatory body in Julie’s time – Judge Goran, Michael Cummings, Barry Rose, Brian Ross, Jim Swanson, Stephen Price, Graeme Campbell and Rex Horne.

Julie has served under nine Chief Executives – Peter Rose (although as Julie put it ‘Chops’ Pascoe was really in charge), Brian Robertson, Brian Judd, Tony Mullins, John Coughlan, Darrell Loewenthal, Max Pool, Sam Nati and John Dumesny.

Julie and her husband are planning a move to Coffs Harbour to be closer to family.

“It is amazing how far the sport of harness racing in NSW has come since I first started working in the industry and I am really going to miss it.

“The Integrity team do such a good job, they work so hard and they have become like family to me, I think I am going to miss them the most.”

Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) is the controlling body for harness racing in New South Wales with responsibility for commercial and regulatory management of the industry including 31 racing clubs across the State.  HRNSW is headed by an industry-appointed Board of Directors and is independent of Government.
