RACE 2 – EXQUISITE JEWELLERS PACE – 1770 metres

EIGHT GAUGE – Worked forward to obtain the lead passing the 1400 metres.  Contacted its own sulky throughout the event and over raced as a result.

OUR THUNDER – Shifted out after the start and had its sulky contacted by HOOKED ON WINNING NZ which was racing to its outside.

HOOKED ON WINNING NZ – Pre-race blood sample.  Hampered after the start when OUR THUNDER had shifted up the track to its inside before contacting that runner’s sulky and becoming checked and galloped.

SHEZA LENNY – Hampered approaching the first turn when being taken in away from HOOKED ON WINNING NZ which was galloping to that runner’s outside and shortly after was then steadied up the track away from BULLI BELLE which had shifted up the track marginally.  Withstood a protest lodged by ABERCROMBIE ART for first place.  Post-race swab sample.

ABERCROMBIE ART – Stewards considered an objection lodged by the connections of ABERCROMBIE ART being trainer Errol Cochrane and driver James Locke alleging interference rounding he first turn.  After considering the stewards replay vison and the evidence of all connections, Stewards determined that driver H Ross was hampered when being taken down the track away from the galloping HOOKED ON WINNING and then away from BULLI BELLE which had shifted up the track to its inside which had taken SHEZA LENNY slightly off its running line position and at the same time ABERCROMBIE ART had progressed towards its inside with its leg into insufficient room and as runners progressed into the turn SHEZA LENNY had moved marginally back down the track resulting in ABERCROMBIE ART being placed in restricted room and galloping.  As Stewards could not be satisfied that this was solely attributed to the movement of SHEZA LENNY and further were not satisfied that there was a sufficient run for ABERCROMBIE ART to progress through the protest was dismissed and the all clear was given on the numbers 9, 10, 7 and 8.  Stewards further cautioned driver H Ross and J Locke in relation to their conduct during the protest hearing.

RACE 8 – TAB.COM CANBERRA CUP – 2570 metres

TUAPEKA LOU NZ – Stewards questioned trainer/driver B Hewitt in relation to the performance of the gelding ($2.30 fav) when failing to run on over the concluding stages to be beaten 25 metres.  Mr Hewitt explained that TUAPEKA LOU NZ contacted its own sulky throughout the event and as a result over raced and felt this had been detrimental to his gelding over the concluding stages.

BAXTER RED – Caught racing three wide in the early stages before becoming unbalanced and galloping shortly after entering the first turn for which a warning was issued.  Stewards questioned driver H Ross in relation to the tactics adopted in particular his decision to improve three wide until obtaining the position outside of the leader passing the 2000 metres after making the early error.  Mr Ross explained that BAXTER RED’S usual racing pattern is to race in a forward position and as a result although losing some ground during the early stages he felt that he would still be able to progress forward to obtain the position outside of the leader and felt that OUR VINNIE would improve to the position outside of the leader and provide him cover at some stage during the event.  Mr Ross explained that when obtaining the position outside of the leader passing the 2000 metres TUAPEKA LOU NZ commenced to contact its own sulky and over raced and as a result the tempo during the middle stages was stronger than anticipated and felt that this is was the reason that he was unable to obtain cover from another runner in the event.  Mr Ross added that with the benefit of hindsight it may have been better to trail OUR VINNIE from the entry to the back straight rather than improve to the position outside of the leader considering he was unable to get to obtain cover.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

ZAMBIA NZ – Post-race swab sample.

RACE 9 – LONSDALE AUTO ELECTRICS PACE – 1770 metres

ONE STUNNIN MELODY – Unable to secure clear running in the home straight on the final occasion and was not fully tested.
