RACE 1 – BEDWELLS FEED BARN PACE – 1730 metres

BETTING RANGER – Driver L Rusten was queried on the tactics adopted in particular if there was an opportunity to obtain cover from WATCH THE GREAT ONE NZ($1.75 fav) when challenged for the position outside the lead at the 1200 metres.  Miss Rusten stated it was the instructions to lead or race outside the leader and when challenged by WATCH THE GREAT ONE NZ at the 1200 metres she elected to hold that position as her horse was travelling comfortably.  She further stated that with the way that her runner finished the race off the decision to hold that position her was justified.

WATCH THE GREAT ONE NZ – Pre-race blood.  Caught racing three wide for the majority of the event.  When passing the 400 metres had a tendency to hang in contacting the sulky wheel of BETTING RANGER and raced roughly for a short distance.  A warning was issued.  Driver C Hart was questioned on the overall performance and the tactics adopted throughout the event.  He stated the gelding was awkward to begin when the start was affected and it was his intentions to race in a forward position he allowed the gelding to work forward to obtain the position outside the lead which he believed would be available.  When progressing to the outside of BETTING RANGER at the 1200 metres that runner was driven forward to hold that position and WATCH THE GREAT ONE NZ was unable to muster enough speed to cross and Mr Hart elected to race three wide from that point where the gelding travelled comfortably.  He further added when passing the 400 metres when placed under pressure the gelding had a tendency to hang in and raced roughly for a short distance , considering the hard run afforded the gelding gave ground to be beaten 28.4 metres .  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.  At the request of connections the gelding will be placed back in the mobile barrier draw in future starts.

SANTA KLAWS NZ – Trainer/driver S Turnbull was queried on the overall performance of the gelding where it gave ground over the concluding stages finishing in tenth and last position beaten 57.1 metres.  Mr Turnbull stated he was caught racing three and four wide in the early stages and when being able to restrain to the tail of the field at the 900 metres the gelding over raced for the majority of the event and when placed under pressure over the concluding stages failed to run on.  He further advised Stewards that the gelding would be going for a spell and as such was stood down for a period of 28 days.  At the request of connections the gelding will be placed back in the mobile barrier draw in future starts.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

RACE 3 – THE TAB APP WARATAH HEAT – 1730 metres

BO DUKE NZ – Driver I Ross was queried on the overall performance of the gelding.  Miss Ross stated from a good barrier draw it was the intensions to lead the event and when unable to do so raced outside the leader which proved unsuitable with the gelding over racing until tiring out of the event when placed under pressure over the final 500 metres.  She further added it would be the intensions to drive the gelding more conservative in future starts where circumstances permit.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

SPEED DIAL – Driver J Reynolds was queried on the overall performance of the mare when being restrained to the tail of the field in the early stages and gave ground over the concluding stages to finish in ninth and last position beaten 47.1 metres.  He stated with the mare racing over the longer distance and from a wide barrier draw elected to restrain to the rear of the field and when doing so SPEED DIAL failed to settle and when placed under pressure over the final 400 metres gave ground to be very disappointing.  He further added he may look to make gear changes to the mare when racing over the longer distance in future starts.

CARBAGANOOSH – Driver E Dwyer was found guilty of a charge under rule 163(1)(a)(iii) in that leaving the 300 metres has shifted her runner off the back of GABBYS SPORTSTAR who was giving ground and as a result has taken DANCE BABY DANCE up the track which in turn has checked THE DANCER who was racing to its outside.  After considering Miss Dwyer’s record in relation to this rule and the circumstances of the event her licence to drive in races was suspended for a period of seven days.  The suspension is to commence at midnight Wednesday, 10 April 2024.
