MORESCO – Stewards questioned Driver E Jones in relation to the driving tactics adopted in particular the circumstances surrounding her runner racing wide for the majority of the event and failing to run on over the concluding stages to be beaten 42.8 metres and finished in last position. Mrs Jones explained Trainer S Hardy had instructed her to drive the mare in a forward position as per its recent racing tactics when successful at Young on 12 April 2024 and explained that after beginning reasonably well she was pressing forward however it took longer than she anticipated for THE MOUNTAIN to be able to obtain the position outside the leader. Mrs Jones explained that from the 1300 metres when SCOTTIE MACH was improving it obtained the position outside the leader passing the 1000 metres and she elected to press forward and at that point she was of the opinion SCOTTIE MACH may press forward to the lead however shortly after improving to the outside of that runner it became apparent it was not going to cross to the lead and SCOTTIE MACH had commenced to over race in the position outside of the leader. Mrs Jones explained that from the 1000 metres to the 800 metres she looked to obtain a position trailing SCOTTIE MACH however when this didn’t eventuate she allowed her drive to continue in a three wide position as she felt there was no benefit to restraining from this point of the event. After considering the explanation of Driver E Jones, Stewards did not feel in all of the circumstances her driving was unreasonable and as a result reported her comments. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. Tightened to the outside of THE MOUNTAIN when that runner had shifted up to its inside.
