HAPPY REG – Pre-race blood sample. Stewards questioned Driver A. Frisby in regards to the driving tactics over the final 100 metres of the event. A. Frisby stated that leaving the 400 metres the gelding was under pressure and not responding to his driving. A. Frisby added that rounding the home turn he shifted slightly wider on the track however as the gelding wasn’t travelling well near the 150 metres he elected to shift back into the running line to save ground. A. Frisby further added that when shifting back down the track the gelding raced roughly near the 125 metres and as a result he had to stop driving the gelding and balance it to ensure it didn’t break stride. A. Frisby said that once balanced he applied the reins to the gelding and to his surprise responded and as a result improved quickly into a gap between SATELLITE SIMBA which shifted out marginally and CARBAGANOOSH and as a result was held up for clear running over the final 50 metres. In noting the circumstances Stewards took into account the manner in which the gelding was travelling prior to the 150 metres and furthermore that the gelding had raced roughly at various stages of the event.

RACE 3 – THE TAB APP PACE – 1730metres

ANANAIS NZ – Near the 900 metres became unbalanced and galloped and was subsequently retired from the event near the 600 metres. A warning was issued. When questioned in relation to the gelding being retired from the event, Driver L. Hansen who was assisted by Trainer D. McDowell advised that the gelding contacted its knee quite significantly near the 900 metres and as such she wasn’t comfortable with the action of the gelding and therefore elected to retire from the event. ERIC THE KICKER – Stewards questioned Driver N. Townsend in relation to the driving tactics adopted on the gelding during the event. N. Townsend stated that as per the gelding’s usual racing pattern he drove forward at the start with the intention of finding the lead. N. Townsend said that he was required to work harder then he would have like during the early stages due to ALTA BILLY also challenging for the lead. N. Townsend added that once he found the lead near the 1300 metres constant pressure was applied by ALTA BILLY due to that runner over-racing despite the efforts of its driver. N. Townsend added that he considered surrendering the lead near the 1000 metres however given that ALTA BILLY had over-raced significantly during the early stages of the event he felt it may have been detrimental to him later in the event and being able to obtain clear running. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

ALTA BILLY – Pre-race blood sample. Stewards questioned Driver J. Turnbull and Trainer A. Turnbull in regards to the tactics adopted on the gelding during the event and the gelding’s racing manners. J. Turnbull stated that he was advised by Trainer A. Turnbull that the gelding can over-race however if able to find the fence and obtain cover the gelding would settle and therefore he elected to drive forward at the start however when ERIC THE KICKER was able to maintain its position to his inside he was caught racing outside the leader near the 1300 metres. J. Turnbull added that once outside the lead the gelding commenced to over-race despite his efforts and therefore raced in advance of ERIC THE KICKER and at a quicker tempo then he would have liked. Trainer A. Turnbull stated that the gelding has had a tendency to over-race throughout its career and although they would have liked to drive the gelding back at the start the gelding’s racing manners don’t allow that and therefore has to be driven forward. A. Turnbull added that although the gelding over-raced she was satisfied with the overall performance in the event. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

J O’Shea added that once finding the lead near the 600 metres he elected to keep driving forward as he was of the opinion that if he was able to obtain a break on the field they may not be able to run him down. J. O’Shea further said that leaving the 100 metres the filly commenced to weaken and tired over the final 50 meters. Stewards noted the comments.
