RACE 2 – BUCHER MUNICIPAL PACE – 1720 metres

MISTER JONES NZ – Pre-race blood samples were obtained.

VINETTE – Raced three wide in the early stages before crossing to the position outside of the leader near the 1200 metres.

IDEAL REDEMPTION – Post-race swab samples were obtained.

TIGER PRINCE – Leaving the 1200 metres received a contact to the off side wheel from MAURLEN BOY which was trailing.  It was established that when VINETTE crossed to the position outside of the leader all runners in the two wide line had to be steadied due to the pace easing which contributed to MAURLEN BOY making contact with the off side wheel of TIGER PRINCE and causing that runner to sustain a flat tyre.

MAURLEN BOY – Passing the 1200 metres had to be steadied when the pace in the running line eased and subsequently made contact with the off side wheel of TIGER PRINCE.  Given the reduction in tempo no direct action was taken against driver C Formosa.  Driver C Formosa was found guilty of a charge under rule 168(1)(a) for careless driving in that passing the 1100 metres C Formosa failed to make sufficient to prevent MAURLEN BOY from racing up onto the near side wheel of TIGER PRINCE and consequently MAURLEN BOY made contact with the sulky which caused MAURLEN BOY to be checked and break gait for a short distance.  In assessing penalty consideration was given to MAURLEN BOY’S tractability and the overall record of C Formosa.  C Formosa was fined the sum of $200.  When questioned regarding the tactics employed on MAURLEN BOY driver C Formosa explained that she was advised by trainer B Fitzpatrick that MAURLEN BOY does have a tendency to hang in and hang out and if the tempo allowed her to make an early or mid-race move then she should avail herself of that opportunity.  C Formosa added that the tempo in the early and middle stages remained solid and therefore there was no opportunity to improve.  C Formosa explained that MAURLEN BOY did have a tendency to hang both in and out throughout the event and leaving the 700 metres when TIGER PRINCE commenced to weaken MAURLEN BOY momentarily lost the back of the main body of the field. Therefore, leaving the 600 metres, MAURLEN BOY had to be driven forward to get onto the back of LUCKY BEACH BOY and near the 400 metres when MAURLEN BOY had momentum C Formosa said that she did not feel comfortable taking MAURLEN BOY five wide around LUCKY BEACH BOY given the racing characteristics of MAURLEN BOY. Instead she improved to the inside of that runner in the hope that she would be able to obtain clear running approaching the home straight.  C Formosa added that MAURLEN BOY did get clear running near the 150 metres and finished the race off fairly.  C Formosa’s explanation was noted however she was reminded of her obligations to ensure that she always with initiative.
