RACE 3 – WARDS ACCOUNTING GROUP PACE – 1609 metres

CONSIDER IT DONE – Leaving the 300 metres shifted out and was corrected by its driver and shifted back in slightly and a short time after EYEKNOW which was trailing made contact with the near side sulky wheel of CONSIDER IT DONE which caused the near side sulky tyre to puncture.

EYEKNOW – Leaving the 300 metres shifted in in order to attempt to improve to the inside of CONSIDER IT DONE which had shifted out slightly and as EYEKNOW improved into doubtful running CONSIDER IT DONE shifted in slightly resulting in EYEKNOW striking the near side sulky wheel of CONSIDER IT DONE which caused EYEKNOW to break gait. At a subsequent inquiry, after considering all available evidence Driver J Gallagher pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 168(1)(a) for careless driving in that he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent EYEKNOW from striking the wheel of CONSIDER IT DONE when endeavouring to improve into doubtful room. In assessing penalty consideration was given to J Gallagher’s overall driving record and the fact CONSIDER IT DONE had not continued to shift out and had been corrected and had shifted back in marginally prior to the incident. Furthermore, Stewards accepted that Driver J Gallagher was not urging his horse forward leading up to the incident. J Gallagher was fined $300.

RACE 6 – IRT YOUR HORSE OUR PASSION PACE – 1609 metres

POWER UP NZ – Lead the event and weakened over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an elevated heart rate. When questioned regarding the tactics employed on POWER UP NZ, Driver J Callaghan explained he drove the gelding out over the first 200 metres and then steadied POWER UP NZ and was happy to take cover from JORDY NZ. However when that runner got to its immediate outside leaving the 1400 metres JORDY NZ failed to respond to the driving of J Gallagher and was unable to gain a significant advantage over his runner therefore without encouragement POWER UP NZ was able to remain racing on the marker pegs and JORDY NZ was steadied. J Callaghan added POWER UP NZ felt comfortable throughout the first quarter despite the fast time of 26.3 seconds. He added he then attempted to give the gelding mid race respite however no sooner did he steady POWER UP NZ, JORDY NZ improved to its outside near the 800 metres and the tempo remained genuine from that point on. J Callaghan acknowledged he may have erred by not restraining POWER UP NZ further in the early stages. J Callaghan said that Trainer D Aiken had been disappointed and frustrated with POWER UP NZ at its most recent starts and was hopeful that by being positive in the early stages the gelding may be more genuine. J Callaghan’s explanation was noted, however he was advised to ensure he always drives with the required level of judgement.

WINONA WRITER – Post-race swab sample.

ERUPT STRIDE NZ – leaving the 400 metres had to be checked away from TROUVILLE which broke gait.

FIRE AND SWORD – Passing the 400 metres was checked when TROUVILLE broke gait.

TROUVILLE – Leaving the 400 metres became unbalanced and broke gait. In view of the fact Trainer J Alchin had only recently acquired TROUVILLE and given its overall intractability history, connections were advised TROUVILLE would be stood down for a period of 14 days and until it can complete two satisfactory official trials.

LOUTENANT NZ – Leaving the 400 metres had to be steadied and taken wider when TROUVILLE broke gait.

RED REACTOR NZ – Approaching the 350 metres was checked by TROUVILLE which broke gait.

CASH AND BLING – Approaching the 350 metres when racing toward the rear of the field had to be checked away from TROUVILLE when that runner broke gait.

JORDY NZ – Pre-race blood sample.

RELENTLESS ME – Out of position at the start. Driver C Geary was fined $50 under Rule 162(1)(j).

RACE 7 – SUCCESS STUD PACE – 1609 metres

GIVE ME A MINUTE NZ – Led the event and failed to run on over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slower than normal recovery rate. When questioned Driver J Brown explained he was not given any firm instructions by Trainer K Pizzuto. J Brown said the gelding had performed well in two trials leading up to today’s event and had lead on both occasions recording relatively good times. With this in mind he said he wanted to allow GIVE ME A MINUTE NZ an opportunity to display its gate speed and the gelding began well and remained racing on the bit without any encouragement from him. He added when he went through the first quarter he acknowledged it was fast but felt GIVE ME A MINUTE NZ was running the time within itself. J Brown stated in the second quarter the gelding continued to travel well and approaching the 1200 metres R ELEVEN ART NZ improved to his outside and from that point that runner kept GIVE ME A MINUTE NZ  running a relatively solid tempo which did not afford GIVE ME A MINUTE NZ any respite. J Brown said he did not want to relinquish the lead to R ELEVEN ART NZ as he believed GIVE ME A MOMENT NZ was always travelling and was entitled to attempt to lead throughout. He said the faster than expected tempo combined with the fact the gelding was first up contributed to his runner weakening in the latter stages of the event. J Brown’s explanation was noted however he was advised to ensure he always drives with the required level of initiative and judgement.

MAJOR FIRE NZ – Post-race swab sample.

R ELEVEN ART NZ – When questioned regarding the tactics employed on R ELEVEN ART NZ Driver A Garrard explained he was instructed by Trainer D Garrard to attempt to find the lead and if not race in a forward position. With this in mind he allowed R ELEVEN ART NZ to display its customary gate speed and worked forward to the position outside the leader. He added when the lead did not appear to be available he was keen to keep his runner settled in a tempo that was genuine which is consistent with its normal racing pattern. A Garrard explained the gelding appreciates a solid tempo and what he perceived to be a drop in grade he thought he may have been able to cross GIVE ME A MINUTE NZ  or if not dictate the speed. A Garrard explained in the circumstances he was very pleased with the overall performance of R ELEVEN ART NZ given he was only run over in the latter stages of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. A Garrard’s explanation was noted.

SURF ACE – Caught wide in the early stages before being restrained toward the rear of the field.

HAS THE COURAGE – Pre-race blood sample.
