Further, he said that the gelding was disadvantaged near the 200 metres when racing tight on the inside of APACHE WHITESOX and was obliged to steady for a short distance.

APACHE WHITESOX – Unbalanced during the score up and cantered momentarily.  Connections were advised that the provision of last chance in the mobile draw would be placed on the gelding’s racing record.  Pulled hard during the middle stages.  Crowded and had to be steadied inside the 400 metres when racing tight on the inside of NIFTY STUDLEIGH which hung in and shifted in despite the efforts of its driver.

SAHARA SIROCCO – When questioned in relation to the tactics adopted and overall performance driver L Rando explained, that he had been instructed to be positive in the early stages despite his wide barrier draw. He said that the gelding began moderately and was further back than envisaged in the early stages. He said that because of this he drove with vigour rounding the turn after the start in an attempt to cross ROYAL GAMBLE and obtain cover in the running line, however this took longer than expected and when he was in a position to cross entering the home straight on the first occasion, DADNDAVE (NZ) shifted out quickly from the marker pegs and took his desired position. He said that this obliged him to race in a 3 wide position and because of the pressure he had applied, SAHARA SIROCCO was difficult to restrain. He stated that after this drive was still racing fiercely, therefore he elected to allow it to stride freely and assumed the position outside the lead without cover. He said that during this time the tempo of the race had been very strong and when placed under pressure approaching the 400m, SAHARA SIROCCO could not improve and weakened quickly from that point. Taking into account all the circumstances, including full review of the decisions made by Mr Rando after being unable to obtain cover passing the 1200m, connections were advised that the provision of last chance to race truly would be applied to the geldings racing record. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.  Connections were advised that the provision of last chance to race truly would be placed on the gelding’s racing record.

DADNDAVE NZ – Post-race swab sample.

STINGRAY TARA NZ – When questioned in relation to the performance, trainer/driver B Fitzpatrick explained that the gelding failed to travel at any stage, was continually unbalanced and raced roughly for some distance inside the 700 metres under pressure.  Further, he said that passing the 400 metres the gelding again hung in and locked wheels momentarily with PORT AU PRINCE NZ, then when placed under pressure in the home straight was disappointing in its finishing effort.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormality.  Mr Fitzpatrick was advised that prior to racing again STINGRAY TARA NZ must perform satisfactorily in an official qualifying trial.
