DOUBLE ACT – Broke stride during the score up.  After considering the recent record of the gelding a warning was issued.

STRAVINSKY – Worked forward to the lead passing the 1900 metres.  Stewards questioned driver Seaton Grima with regard to the tactics he adopted through the early and middle stages of the event. Mr Grima advised Stewards that he always intended to lead, given STRAVINSKY races best in front. Mr Grima explained that he attempted to hold DOM TORETTO NZ in the early stages, however eventually determined to let that runner go as he was confident it would hand up. Mr Grima further explained that soon after he worked forward to the lead, Mr Hewitt commenced a challenge on LAVER NZ. Mr Grima explained that he never intended to surrender the lead to LAVER NZ, as he felt his runner had been going as well as LAVER NZ had at its sole Australian start and felt his best way to beat it was to hold the lead. Mr Grima acknowledged that the tempo through the lead time and 1st half was quicker that he would have liked but felt STRAVINSKY was capable of running those times. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities. After consideration, Stewards advised Mr Grima that they believed he had erred, in not taking cover from LAVER NZ once the tempo of the lead time was so quick, and not allowing his runner some respite by further slowing the tempo through the 1st and 2nd quarters once LAVER NZ ceased its challenge. However, Stewards determined to take no further action other than to strongly remind Mr Grima of his obligation to ensure he drives his runners in a manner that is within their capabilities and is prepared to vary his pre-race tactics when required to ensure he gives them every possible opportunity to finish in the best possible position.

LAVER NZ – Pre-race blood sample.

DOM TORETTO NZ – Driver Cameron Hart was reprimanded under Rule 163(2)(a) for shifting wider on the track to avoid the tiring STRAVINSKY prior to the 400 metres and placing KOSIMO in a three wide position prior to the nominated marker.

STAR MAJOR – Caught racing three wide in the early stages of the event before working forward to the lead passing the 1800 metres.  Hung in throughout the event.  After considering the recent record of the gelding, a warning was issued.  Stewards questioned driver Jim Douglass with regards to STAR MAJOR making contact with the off side sulky wheel of WHEREYABINBOPPIN when that gelding was being restrained upon entry to the first turn.  Mr Douglass advised Stewards that his runner was hanging in and over racing at the same time that WHEREYABINBOPPIN was being restrained and as a result he made minimal contact when shifting his runner three wide at that stage.  After considering the explanation provided by Mr Douglass, Stewards determined to take no further action other than to remind Mr Douglass of his obligations.
