General: Due to the extreme temperatures, measures within the HRNSW hot weather policy were implemented including, but not limited to, an additional vet, extra hoses throughout the horse stabling complex, additional ice buckets with sponges within the race day stalls for additional cooling & horses not required to parade prior to their race. No horses were detected to having any adverse effects.

Driver Brent Blythe pleaded guilty to a charge under AHR Rule 156(2)(a) that at the Young trials on 20th January 2025 whilst the driver of FIRST FOUR LETTERS in trial one (1) that in the home straight on the final occasion & passing the finish line he applied the whip to the mare which being where his whip action involved more than a flicking motion in doing so utilising an extravagant whip action which engaged his shoulder. Mr Blythe was fined the sum of $400. In assessing penalty in accordance with the HRNSW Penalty Guidelines established under the provisions of Rule 156, stewards took into account this was Mr Blythe’s first offence within a sixty (60) day or drive period which usually carries a minimum penalty of $200, however despite his guilty plea and acknowledgement of the offence, determined the severity of the rule breach to be at the higher end of the scale of offending, therefore a blatant disregard for rule 156 (2) and the clear requirements in place for reasonable and responsible use of the whip within harness racing.

RACE 1 – RAILWAY HOTEL PACE – 1635 metres

HOLME BOY – ($1.70 Fav) Pre-race swab. Raced roughly as the start was effected. Broke gait clear of interference approaching the 1400m checking GEOFFREY BEE, LOGAN DREAM, LEAD ROLE & ALL SO SASSY all to varying degrees. A warning was issued against the racing manners of HOLME BOY. Driver Harrison Ross was queried into the tactics adopted upon the gelding in particular if he gave consideration to obtain a trail approaching the 900m when REASON TO PARTY was improving forward which would of afforded HOLME BOY a one-one position prior to the gelding being placed under pressure passing the 400m to finish in 7th position beaten 7.7m. Mr Ross explained he was not aware of REASON TO PARTY was improving forward at that stage of the event and elected to maintain the outside the leader as the gelding was contacting the sulky wheels & and commencing to race keenly. Mr Ross added he was confident the gelding would still perform well despite breaking gait as HOLME BOY had not lost a significant amount of ground & had won its last race from a similar position. After viewing the replays and the comments of Mr Ross Stewards advised Mr Ross his drive lacked judgement in particular with his awareness to other runners improving into the event especially being an A grade driver his expected to show full awareness at all times in the event.

Mr Painting advised he would take the corrective measures to rectify any reoccurrences going forward in particular when the mare is racing on the smaller circuits within the area. Mr Painting added he was satisfied with the overall performance of the mare considering the manner how hard TYABB WONDER pulled throughout the event.

HILLVIEW SAM – ($6.50) Pre-race swab. Trainer/Driver Rodney Coelli was queried into the seemingly improved performance of the gelding compared to recent starts. Mr Coelli advised HILLVIEW SAM was only having its third race start for his stable after having a significant spell. Mr Coelli advised the gelding had performed well at its first start from a spell at Junee 25th January 2025 when finishing in 9th position as the gelding was held up and failed to be tested at any stages of the event. Mr Coelli added the gelding performed moderately at its most recent start at Leeton 28th January 2025 when finishing in 9th position however attributed the performance to the gelding having drawn the widest barrier on the front row and had to be restrained to the rear of the field due to high speed drawn underneath on that occasion and was unable to improve into the event at any stage. Mr Coelli advised tonight HILLVIEW SAM had drawn a more favourable barrier this evening with barrier #2 compared to its two (2) prior starts and was confident of a forward showing as the gelding had worked well since its most recent start and had derive significant benefit from both runs after a lengthy spell and HILLVIEW SAM was dropping back to a maiden only class event when both prior starts were against stronger opposition. Driver Rodney Coelli was fined the sum of $200 under AHR Rule 156(2)(a) for applying the whip to the gelding with more than a flicking action and with overt force inside the final 250m.
