Mr Downey stated with the gelding having an economical run he was disappointed and believed the gelding may have trained off and would look to freshen him up in the coming weeks. SIR RICHARD LEE – Driver J Reynolds was questioned on the tactics adopted on the gelding when leading, failing to run on over the concluding stages to finish in 8th position beaten 57.7 metres. Mr Reynolds stated Trainer J Mitchell thought the gelding would have the speed to lead which he obtained easily, when trying to restrain the gelding it commenced to over race and contact its own sulky making him difficult to restrain. He further added the gelding failed to settle throughout the event and when challenged by SMOOTH BUZZZ at the 1200 metres he elected to hold the lead but a short time after the gelding was under pressure and failed to respond due to the hard run. In assessing the tactics adopted by Mr Reynolds, Stewards believe that he had erred to some degree when challenged by SMOOTH BUZZ at the 1200 metres by not obtaining cover to give his horse some respite due to the tempo of the race and the gelding perceivably being up in grade. Although erring in his tactics stewards don`t believe it to be culpable enough to suspend his driver licence but issued a reprimand under Rule 149(2) for an unacceptable drive and would expect more suitable tactics going forward. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Connections were advised the gelding would be required to requalify on one occasion prior to racing.
IM DESIRABLE – Miss O Frisby was queried on the overall performance of the mare which failed to run on over the concluding stages and finished in 9th position beaten 102.6 metres. She stated after being caught three wide in the early stages she elected to work forward and with more speed in the race than expected and over the longer distance proved detrimental to the mares overall performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Connections were advised the mare would be required to requalify on one occasion.
