RACE 1 – CONQUEROR MILLING COMPANY PACE – 1760 metres

SOMEBODYS GIRL – Tired over the concluding stages after leading. Driver R Strong was questioned regarding the tactics adopted with the mare, in particular whether there was an opportunity to surrender the lead to MARDIBRINGSAPARTY when it improved to his outside leaving the 1400 metres given the fast pace that was being set at that point. R Strong stated that he had been instructed by the Trainer to attempt to lead from the inside front row draw and try to lead throughout if they could, as the Trainer was of the view that it did not run genuinely at its most recent start when driven with cover and it had won previously when it had led, and he had driven it in a trial recently when it led and performed well in his view. He added he was able to lead fairly easily and while he felt they were going quickly in the early stages he felt his mare was running along at a tempo it was comfortable with and was surprised when he was made aware of the first quarter time. He further added he felt MARDIBRINGSAPARTY didn’t overly pressure him until it commenced to over-race and then his mare was under pressure near the 800 metres to maintain the lead. Stewards advised R Strong that they were of the view that he had erred by not surrendering the lead when there was an opportunity to do so from near the 1400 metres given the pace being set and the mare’s recent form, however did not issue a charge given the overall performance of the mare. A post-race Veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities, although it was reported that the mare did have a slower than normal post-race recovery.
