SUPA AMERICAN – Stewards questioned driver Jett Turnbull with regards to the tactics he adopted in the early and middle stages of the event, in addition to the overall performance of the horse which gave ground over the concluding stages to finish in ninth placing beaten 19 metres. Mr Turnbull advised Stewards that he was given instructions by trainer Jason Grimson to come out hard and roll to the front and do not look to hand up to any runner as the horse races best when able to lead. Mr Turnbull advised Stewards that he was able to lead the event as expected before pressure was applied to his outside by SWEETHEART BART, however in accordance with his instructions he had no intention of handing up to any other runner. Mr Turnbull further added that SUPA AMERICAN had won six of its seven races when able to lead and despite the fast first half of the event he was satisfied that his horse was capable of that performance as it was not too dissimilar when leading at Menangle on 14 March. Mr Turnbull explained however that he was slightly disappointed with the horse’s performance when it gave ground over the concluding stages. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Turnbull, Stewards determined to note his comments. A post-race veterinary examination of SUPA AMERICAN failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.
NO HEART THROB NZ – Pre-race blood sample.
SWEETHEART BART – Caught racing wide in the early stages of the event before working forward to the position outside the leader passing the 1100 metres. Stewards questioned driver Seaton Grima with regards to the tactics he adopted throughout the early and middle stages of the event. Mr Grima advised Stewards that the gelding has a tendency to over race and has had a throat operation so is a greater chance of choking down, so in his opinion needs to be driven with as little restraint as possible. Mr Grima further added that the horse went well the previous week when driven in a forward position, so he elected to again adopt those tactics and he thought that when he lets his runner stride forward of SUPA AMERICAN passing the 1000 metres, that Jett Turnbull was going to hand up on SUPA AMERICAN, however that didn’t eventuate. Mr Grima added that he was very happy with the performance of SWEETHEART BART and will therefore continue to drive the horse in this manner moving forward. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Grima, Stewards determined to note his comments.
