SAPPHIRESNDIAMONDS – Unable to secure clear running in the early stages of the home straight.

PEPPI GRATZ – Slow to begin.

FOLLOW THE MONEY – Pre-race blood sample.  Stewards questioned driver W Rixon in relation to the disappointing performance of the gelding when failing to run on over the concluding stages to be beaten 29.3 metres and finished in ninth position.  Mr Rixon explained that the gelding received no luck throughout the event stating that after beginning well he believed he would be able to cross to the position outside of the leader relatively easy however as he looked to progress forward of TWO SAINTS that runner raced keenly and as a result he was required to do more work than anticipated to get to the position outside of the leader leaving the 1150 metres.  Mr Rixon explained that after obtaining that position, he pressed forward to look for the lead until a point approaching the 1000 metres stating that he felt NEED FOUR SPEED would take cover considering its recent racing pattern and when that did not eventuate he was then caught racing outside of the leader.  Mr Rixon explained that being first up since 22 October 2024 combined with the run afforded was not beneficial to his gelding however expected the gelding to take benefit from today’s run.  Stewards noted his comments.  A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

PROTAGONIST – Hung in rounding the first turn until working forward to obtain the lead passing the 1000 metres.  Stewards questioned trainer/driver J Grimson in relation to the seemingly improved performance of the gelding.  Mr Grimson explained that he had been confident with the gelding’s work leading into the event and explained that in its previous race start he had instructed driver J Callaghan to drive forward with vigour however when he was unable to cross, the gelding was taken back to race in a one out two back position.  Mr Grimson explained that he was satisfied with the performance of the gelding today and noting in a similar graded event he would drive the gelding in the same manner.

NOISY CRUSADER – Failed to run on over the concluding stages.

SON OF THE SHARK – Driver C Fitzpatrick was issued a reprimand under 163(1)(a)(iii) for causing interference in that approaching and rounding the first turn he has allowed SON OF THE SHARK to shift down the track whilst not being fully clear of MERRYWOOD TONY resulting in that runner being placed in restricted room for some distance before SON OF THE SHARK was taken wider and as a result WEONA SIR VIVOR which was racing to its outside was taken up the track to a three wide position which further hampered MONTEFIORE NZ until the 1100 metres when SON OF THE SHARK was shifted down the track to the back of MERRYWOOD TONY

WEONA SIR VIVOR – Hampered between the 1200 and 1100 metres when racing wider than required when SON OF THE SHARK shifted up the track to its inside.
