In not taking sterner action Stewards were mindful of the evidence of Grace Panella (which was supported by the films) that PEPPA BLISS had commenced to hang in upon entry to the turn out of the home straight and Ms Panella had made an effort to correct the mare up the track and not restrict the room of SINBINNED.

SWEET TARA – Stewards opened an inquiry into the manner in which driver Dan Morgan drove the filly over the final 300 metres of the event. Mr Morgan was questioned regarding the reasons for him looking over his left shoulder on several occasions prior to SWEE TARA shifting up the track which provided an opportunity for stable mate SHALARM MISS to improve to its inside. Mr Morgan advised Stewards that the gelding has a habit of laying in on the turns and laying out in the straights and he felt that upon rounding the final turn the horse was laying down the track and restricting the racing room of SHALAMAR MISS. Mr Morgan explained that this is the reason he looked over his left shoulder. Mr Morgan further advised that upon entering the home straight he elected to shift his runner wider on the track to relieve some pressure and the filly commenced to lay out which provided the room available to SHARMARM MISS. Mr Morgan further advised that the near side spreader which had been applied to the filly caused chaffing to the horse’s near side hind leg. A post-race veterinary examination of the filly revealed a deep lateral cordial laceration to the offside hind heel. After considering the evidence, Stewards advised Mr Morgan that they had difficulty in accepting the evidence he provided, however in view of the injury sustained to the filly determined to take no further action other than to advise Mr Morgan of his obligations to ensure he drives his runner in a competitive manner. Acting in accordance with the recommendations of the veterinary surgeon SWEET TARA was stood down for a period of 14 days and until the production of a veterinary certificate of clearance.
