RACE 1 – TAB VENUE MODE PACE – 1720 metres

SMART AND MIGHTY NZ – Commenced to weaken near the 500 metres and gave ground over the concluding stages to be beaten 34.9 metres. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no obvious abnormalities. When questioned regarding the tactics he employed on SMART AND MIGHTY NZ Driver R Morris explained that the horse had been in the care of Trainer K Morris for almost 3 weeks and in this time, he had driven the horse exclusively in all of its trackwork. He added that in his opinion the gelding was working extremely well, and he was confident that the gelding would perform well in tonight’s event. R Morris stated that from a favourable barrier draw (barrier 1) over 1720 metres at Penrith it was always his intention to attempt to lead and hold the lead throughout. He said in conversations with the owners they had expressed that SMART AND MIGHTY NZ has performed best when able to lead. R Morris explained that after leading into the first turn h showed Driver S Grima (DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ) that it was his intention to maintain the lead and he was surprised when that runner continued to apply pressure into the back straight on the first occasion. He said that he was satisfied with the fast first quarter however would like to have been able to settle SMART AND MIGHTY NZ through the second quarter during the middle stages. However, DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ continued to race in close proximity to his outside and dictated the tempo of the event. R Morris added that while he acknowledged he was going faster than expected during the early and middle stages, he was reluctant to surrender the lead to DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ given that runner had raced three wide to the position outside the leader and had covered more ground than his runner. He said he was concerned that he would have been taken out of the race if that runner weakened. And, in his opinion the recent exposed form of DONTLETFEARSTOPYA was not overly strong. R Morris’s explanation was noted. However, he was advised to always drive with initiative and judgement.

BETTINE – Unable to secure clear running at any stage in the home straight and was not fully tested.

A LOT OF LUVIN – Caught wide in the early stages before being restrained to the rear of the field.

DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ – Driver S Grima was fined $100 under Rule 43(1) for presenting himself on course only 9 minutes prior to Race 1’s advertised race time of 5.42pm. When questioned regarding the tactics employed on DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ, Driver S Grima explained Trainer J Connelly was confident the gelding would be able to lead and if this was to occur expected that the gelding would be difficult to beat. S Grima stated that after beginning well he was beaten for speed by SMART AND MIGHTY NZ and it was apparent that approaching the 1400 metres that it was the intention of Driver R Morris (SMART AND MIGHTY NZ) to hold the lead. He said that DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ struck his own wheel on occasions and with this in mind, he had one more look for the lead leaving the 1400 metres and soon desisted with that challenge. S Grima added that he attempted to restrain DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ from that point however, the gelding over raced significantly and he was unable to get DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ to settle. S Grima said that approaching the 500 metres he made some use of the gelding to cross SMART AND MIGHTY NZ and get to the marker pegs and shortly after he was successful in steadying DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ for the next 200 metres. S Grima said that he was pleased with the performance of DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ given the circumstances of today’s event. Connections were advised DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ would be placed on its last chance to race truly due to its inclination to over race and not being able to be restrained appropriately during middle stages.
