SCRUFFY MOTO – When questioned in relation to the tactics adopted in the early and middle stages driver J Turnbull explained that from his back line barrier draw, he had been instructed to drive forward if the tempo was slow. He said that after beginning well he obtained a covered position in the running line however after significant early speed, the race slowed considerably and after entering the back straight he elected to shift wider and drive forward when WILLIES DOLLAR improved sharply. He said that because he had driven WILLIES DOLLAR recently, he was aware of its racing style and was confident that given the speed of the race he could improve forward of it and obtain the position outside the lead. He stated that after shifting wider and obtaining a trail from WILLIES DOLLAR, his drive could not muster sufficient speed to cross, resulting in it being trapped three wide and from the 1000m it became unresponsive. He said that passing the winning post with a lap remaining he was still wide, however decided to maintain that position at that time as restraining would have been detrimental to SCRUFFY MOTTO’s winning prospects and he allowed it to travel comfortably before again applying pressure passing the 400m were he gained no response.
