MAX DELIGHT – Caught racing wide in the early stages of the event before being restrained to the tail of the field passing the 1100 metres. Stewards questioned driver Will Rixon with regards to the tactics he adopted in the early stages of the event, in addition to his decision to come back to the inside of LOYALIST NZ approaching the 400 metres rather than come wider. Mr Rixon advised Stewards that in his pre-race discussions with trainer David Aiken they were concerned with the speed displayed by KINGMAN NZ at its most recent start in the Len Smith Mile and the way it ran along during that event where a horse like SWAYZEE struggled to sit outside KINGMAN NZ and finish off the event. Mr Rixon advised that it was therefore his intent to try to slot into the running line in the early stages however when he was unable to do so he felt he had little opportunity to other than to restrain to the tail of the field. Mr Rixon further added that passing the 500 metres he felt that LOYALIST NZ came off the bit and was under pressure and that it wouldn’t be in his horse’s best interest to continue to follow that runner until the 400 metres before making a wide run. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed it to be lame in the off side front leg and acting on veterinary recommendations was stood down until the production of a veterinary certificate of clearance. After considering the explanation provided by Mr Rixon, Stewards determined to note his comments.
