RACE 1 – CRYSTAL FEST @ PENRITH SHOWGROUND OCT 25-26 – 1720 metres
DESIDERIO – Driver Robert Morris was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding in particular his decision to persist in attempting to obtain the lead shortly after passing the 1400 metres. Mr Morris explained that he was instructed to lead if possible as previously DESIDERIO performed best when able to do so. Mr Morris further added that after contesting the lead entering the first turn he was caught three wide when ROCKSIE ROCK and OLIVIA SHANNON improved to his inside. Mr Morris added that he persisted with his challenge as he had gained a three quarter length advantage on ROCKSIE ROCK and felt that ROCKSIE ROCKS may surrender the lead shortly after passing the 1400 metres, however when this did not occur he applied pressure to that runner for a short distance thereafter in the hope that he would obtain the position following ROCKSIE ROCKS ahead of OLIVIA SHANNON but was unsuccessful in being able to do so. Mr Morris further explained that once caught outside the leader he then commenced to steady DESIDERIO to allow the gelding some respite and applied no further pressure thereafter to the leader ROCKSIE ROCK. Mr Morris added that ultimately the early use made of DESIDERIO, combined with the gelding being caught without cover for the remainder of the event, contributed to DESIDERIO giving ground over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of DESIDERIO failed to reveal any significant findings. Upon consideration of the tactics adopted and the explanation provided Stewards were not satisfied the tactics were entirely unreasonable or unacceptable in the circumstances and took the matter no further. Post-race veterinary examination of DESIDERIO failed to reveal any significant findings.

DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ – Driver Seaton Grima was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding in particular his decision to apply pressure to the leader GUEST ARTIST NZ shortly after passing the 1000 metres which contributed to the second quarter being recorded in a fast 28.6 seconds. Mr Grima explained that he was instructed to lead if possible, however when this was not possible he elected to continue to drive DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ in a manner which ensured the speed of the race remained constant as previously the gelding has performed best when able to do so. Mr Grima further added that he anticipated that should he apply pressure to GUEST ARTIST NZ that it may surrender the lead. Mr Grima added that he was satisfied with the performance of DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ with the gelding finishing in fifth placing only beaten less than seven metres. Upon consideration of all the available evidence noting particularly the recent form of DONTLETFEARSTOPYA NZ, Stewards did not feel the tactics adopted in the circumstances were entirely unacceptable noting that the gelding was only beaten seven metres, however advised Mr Grima that he must be cautious in adopting such tactics particularly in circumstances where fast sectionals are recorded as he brings himself under the Stewards focus.

GENERAL – Consideration was given to a protest lodged by Lleyton Green, driver of 2nd placegetter HONOLULU PRINCESS, alleging interference against fellow 2nd placegetter I AM RAVISHING over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from Mr Green (HONOLULU PRINCESS), Cameron Hart (I AM RAVISHING), hearing submissions from Mr D McDowell co-trainer of HONOLULU PRINCESS and review of the available replays it was established that approaching the 100 metres I AM RAVISHING had shifted out resulting in HONOLULU PRINCESS being checked and losing momentum to then finish in a dead heat with I AM RAVISHING. Upon consideration of all the available evidence, particularly noting the dead heat between the two runners, Stewards were satisfied that the interference suffered to HONOLULU PRINCESS was sufficient to uphold the protest and the all clear was subsequently given on the amended placings. At a subsequent inquiry driver Cameron Hart was reprimanded under Rule 163(1)(a)(iii) for allowing his runner to shift out in a manner which checked HONOLULU PRINCESS. In not taking more severe action against Mr Hart Stewards were mindful he had taken some steps to avoid the subsequent interference.
