CLASSIC ARC – A pre and post-race veterinary examination was conducted as the gelding has had over 200 race starts.  No abnormalities were detected on either examination.  Driver M Atkinson was questioned on the tactics adopted on the gelding when shifting three wide at or around the 1200 metres and when obtaining the position outside the leader at the 800 metres continued to apply pressure to his runner until tiring over the final 300 metres to finish in fifth position beaten 17,8 metres.  He stated it was the instructions to restrain from barrier six as there was perceived speed to his inside and then when settling in the middle stages to work forward to the position outside the lead as the gelding is one pace and then to keep the race at an even speed. He further added that he was disappointed when the gelding gave ground over the concluding stages.  Trainer N Turnbull was also questioned and confirmed the tactics given to Mr Atkinson as the gelding had been driven in a similar manner previously and had performed well.  Mr Atkinson was advised although driving to instructions they must be flexible to allow him to drive within the capabilities of the horse and that his drives are not coming into concern of Stewards.  Furthermore trainer N Turnbull was advised when giving tactics they must be within the capabilities of the horse and not to the detriment of any other runner.
