Connections were advised MY HIGH PEAK would now be placed on its last chance to race truly.

TUMULT – Out of position at the start and will continue to be placed outside the draw. Driver Shawn Pearce was reprimanded under Rule 149(2) for driving in an unacceptable manner in that after TUMULT had been out of position at the start it was unacceptable to then direct the mare 3 wide passing the 1700 metres after rejoining the remainder of the field to occupy the position outside the leader which contributed to TUMULT tiring over the concluding stages to finish in last placing. A post-race veterinary examination of TUMULT revealed some minor swelling in the left hindleg, however the mare was not lame. In not taking more severe action against Mr Pearce, Stewards were mindful of his relative driving inexperience (130 career drives), however advised Mr Pearce that until TUMULT shows more favourable form in races he would be expected to drive the mare in a more conservative manner or more severe action may be taken.

RACE 3 – TAB WE’RE ON PACE – 1609 metres

The all clear of this event was delayed due to GENERAL MISCONDUCT starting from the incorrect barrier position. It was subsequently established that due to an error GENERAL MISCONDUCT had not been placed outside the draw in mobile start races, and consequently the mare had started from barrier one, when it should have started from an outside barrier (Barrier 9 or 10). After consideration of the evidence provided by driver Cameron Hart, trainer Trevor Munday and review of the race in its entirety, Stewards ordered that in accordance with Rule 64 that GENERAL MISCONDUCT be declared a non-runner and all bets placed on GENERAL MISCONDUCT be refunded in full. The all clear was subsequently given on the judge’s placings.

SOHO WASHINGTON – Raced greenly and shifted in contacting marker pegs passing the 1000 metres and a warning was issued.

SHARK DANCER – Over raced during the early stages when being restrained by its driver. Driver Sebastian Piltz was questioned regarding the tactics adopted on the gelding in particular his decision to pressure the leader SOHO WASHINGTON shortly after passing the 1000 metres after SHARK DANCER had been 3 wide from the start of the event. Mr Piltz explained it was his initial intention to obtain a position with cover immediately after the start, however SHARK DANCER over raced and consequently he was unable to restrain the gelding. Mr Piltz added that when unable to restrain SHARK DANCER to obtain a position with cover, he allowed the gelding to progress forward steadily to occupy the position outside the leader which he was able to do so approaching the 1000 metres. Mr Piltz added that shortly after occupying the position to the outside of SOHO WASHINGTON he noticed SOHO WASHINGTON race greenly, shift in and contact marker pegs and he felt that he should he progress forward he would likely be able to obtain the lead easily which would be more advantageous to SHARK DANCER as opposed to being positioned outside of the leader particularly considering the early use he had made of SHARK DANCER. Mr Piltz further explained upon briefly challenging SOHO WASHINGTON he was unsuccessful in obtaining the lead and he then attempted to steady SHARK DANCER and not apply any further pressure to SOHO WASHINGTON, however the gelding continued to over race. A post-race veterinary examination of SHARK DANCER failed to reveal any significant findings. Upon consideration of all the available evidence, Stewards were satisfied the tactics adopted by Mr Piltz were not entirely unreasonable considering the circumstances of SOHO WASHINGTON racing greenly at the 1000 metres and placed SHARK DANCER on its last chance to race truly for over racing and racing fiercely which prevented the horse from being restrained during the early stages.

LOCHIEL NZ – Inconvenienced shortly after passing the 1000 metres when SOHO WASHINGTON raced greenly, shifted in and contacted marker pegs.

RACE 7 – PRYDE’S STAMINA PACE – 1609 metres

WILLS WAY – Driver Will Rixon was questioned regarding the performance of the gelding which finished in 8th placing beaten 17 metres ($10.00). Mr Rixon explained in his opinion WILLS WAY was disappointing in today’s event as the gelding was able to lead relatively easily and had obtained a favourable second quarter of 30.2 seconds. A post-race veterinary examination of WILLS WAY failed to reveal any significant findings. Mr Rixon was fined $200 under Rule 162(1)(www)(iii) in that during the early part of the straight he permitted WILLS WAY to shift out and consequently MAJOR ICON NZ obtained a clear run to his inside.
