RACE 1 – TAB VENUE MODE PACE – 1635 metres

General – Prior to the all-clear being given, J Painting the Trainer/Driver of the second placed runner MISTER SEASIDE advised Stewards he would like to view the patrol footage of the home straight to ascertain whether he had grounds to lodge a protest against the first placed JUST GO JOE. After viewing the footage J Painting lodged an objection against that runner, alleging interference over the final 100 metres of the home straight. His stated grounds being that JUST GO JOE had shifted out and his runner had locked wheels with it and he had to check losing ground and momentum. Evidence was heard from the Driver of JUST GO JOE – R Strong, and further evidence from J Painting, and the patrol footage was further reviewed. Stewards upheld the protest as they were of the view that JUST GO JOE had shifted-out in the home straight, resulting in it locking wheels with MISTER SEASIDE and MISTER SEASIDE being checked leaving the 100 metres, and given the way both runners were finishing the race off and the margin of a neck between them at the finish, felt that if the interference had not occurred, MISTER SEASIDE would have beaten JUST GO JOE to the finish line. All clear was given on the new numbers – 9, 2, 8, 6.

JUST GO JOE – Shifted-out under pressure in the home straight, as a result locked wheels with MISTER SEASIDE leaving the 100 metres and that runner was checked. Lost first place on protest to MISTER SEASIDE.  Driver R Strong pleaded guilty to a charge under Rule 162(1)(www)(ii) for not making sufficient effort to prevent his runner from shifting out in the home straight. R Strong was fined the sum of $200, in assessing penalty Stewards took into account his guilty plea and good record under this rule. Post-race swab sampled.

NO MORE PROMISES – Driver R Strong was questioned regarding his tactics adopted with the mare, in particular after finding the lead in what appeared to be an easy manner and setting a moderate first quarter, him seemingly surrendering that position to BIDGEE BABE without offering any resistance leaving the 1200 metres. He stated that the instructions from the Trainer prior to the race were to attempt to lead but if pressured to take a sit. He added that prior to the race he felt BIDGEE BABE would make a move to attempt to obtain the lead as it is usually driven that way in this grade of race. He further added that when he saw that runner coming with momentum he was happy to take cover behind it as he felt it was a strong chance in the race, and he was also of the view that his runner is not overly strong so would not be able to resist a challenge for the lead from that runner at that stage and be able to finish the race off.

BIDGEE BABE – Trainer/Driver S Hallcroft was queried regarding the seemingly improved performance of the mare, he stated that he felt she was down in grade tonight in comparison to the fields she has been racing in recently. He added that she has shown in the past that she is very competitive when down in this grade and he is able to drive her more aggressively to obtain a forward position in the knowledge that she is likely to finish the race off against these runners. He further added that she can be inconsistent as she does things wrong in her races, but when she puts it together like she did tonight, she can race well. Post-race swab sampled.

He added that he was happy to hold the lead when TIGERNATOR improved to his outside near the 1000 metres for that reason, and additionally he didn’t feel that runner’s recent form was overly strong given the sectionals it ran when it led and got run down at Bathurst on the 11th of February.
