SPUNKYS UPTONOGOOD – When questioned in relation to the performance driver B Hughes explained, that after obtaining a forward position in the early stages the filly travelled relatively well, however when he attempted to drive forward inside the 600m when DOUBLE NEEDS established a break on the field, his drive was unresponsive and unable to maintain the tempo of the race at that time and weakened from that point. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality. Connections were advised that a poor performance warning would be placed on the filly’s racing record.

CAPPY – Post race swab sample.

DOUBLE NEEDS – Pre race blood sample. When questioned in relation to the tactics adopted, driver C Griffiths explained, that he had been instructed to lead if possible and he drove with some urgency in the early stages to achieve this. He said that after obtaining a position on the marker pegs, he attempted to ease the tempo to a moderate speed however when negotiating the turn after the start the gelding continually struck its own sulky resulting in it over racing and being difficult to restrain. He said that after this he regained some control, however, was again disadvantaged when cornering as his drive continued to contact its sulky and race fiercely. He said that rounding the turn into the back straight on the final occasion DOUBLE NEEDS took charge and could not be suitably restrained. He stated that he had no intention of establishing a significant break on the field at that stage, however he felt that continuing to attempt to restrain at this stage was futile and he allowed the gelding to pace at its own speed. He said that he felt his drive weaken inside the 400m and drove with vigour from there and whilst its waywardness effected its finishing performance it ran to the finish as well as it could. His explanation was accepted. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality. Connections were advised that the provision of last chance to race truly would be placed on the gelding’s racing record.

He said that after entering the back straight he was obliged to shift wider when CAPTAIN DORIAN weakened in front of him and from that point was forced to race wider than intended. She said that when challenged inside the 400m she applied pressure to her drive, however it was unresponsive and after racing tight inside runners approaching the home turn weakened in the run to the finish. She added that in continued preparation it would be the intention to gain a marker peg position in the early stages if possible and the gelding would ideally be placed in lower grade events. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormality.
