FIRESTORM RED – ($2.90 Fav) Underwent pre and post-race veterinary examinations due to the gelding started in excess of 200 starts. Neither examination revealed any significant abnormalities. Driver Blake Medlyn was queried into the tactics adopted upon the gelding in particular his decision when drawn the widest on outside of the second row to improve forward from the start racing four (4) wide rounding the first turn until entering the back straight on the first occasion being restrained to a rearward running line position & if he gave consideration to progress forward with his forward move to obtain the position outside the leader. Mr Medlyn advised he felt FIRESTORM RED was the highest assessed horse in the event and was following out STUDLEIGH SUNRISE which in his pre assessment would lead the event however when this runner was not able to lead shortly after the start and its driver restraining he elected to continue with his forward in an endeavour to obtain a more forward position however this was not optional without enduring significant work mindful the speed of the event therefore was able to obtain a position in the running line when ALTA BILLY broke gait rounding the first turn. Mr Medlyn added he elected to improve forward after passing the 800m with the slower second quarter of 31 seconds which would allow FIRESTORM RED to be close enough to the leaders when the speed increased in the final half. After viewing the available replays along with the comments of Mr Medlyn Stewards felt the tactics were not unreasonable in the circumstances and noted Mr Medlyns comments.

TEDDY ZING – Tightened & failed to negotiate the first turn despite the driver’s efforts contacting the sulky wheel of JENNY THE SHARK causing the gelding to break gait. A warning was issued against the racing manners of TEDDY ZING.

JENNY THE SHARK – ($21.00) Trainer/driver Graham Betts was queried into the seemingly improved performance of the mare in winning compared to its two (2) prior lifetime starts. Mr Betts advised the mare was having its first start for his stable as the mare had only been with his stable for less than a couple of weeks and had not impressed him with its recent trackwork and was somewhat surprised by the victory as the mare had benefitted by the two favourites being checked or breaking gait after the start and the mare was able to obtain an easy lead throughout and recorded a moderate 2.2.0 mile rate for the 1660m distance. Driver Graham Betts was issued a reprimand for tightening the racing room of TEDDY ZING entering the first turn. In not taking more action against Mr Betts stewards were mindful the racing manners of TEDDY ZING had also contributed to the incident in failing to negotiate the first turn. Post-race swab.
